Valley. Though it could be considered an endangered species, its also considered an isolated population of the common marsh wren, so it is lumped into that category.
In this scenario, neighboring Green Valley Ranch needs more pasture in which its cattle can graze. One of the solutions proposed is to build
a dike through Philip Creek, which is where the Patricks Marsh Wren, nests and lives. If the dike is built, Philips Creek will be eliminated, meaning a definite danger to
the Patricks Marsh Wren population. Though Green Valley Ranch has offered to relocate much of the population to one of the three habitats it doesnt want to reclaim, this method
is too chancy. Its important the Philips Creek not be eliminated by the building of this dyke. Part of the problem when
it comes to relocating the population is that the Patricks Marsh Wren has a high site fidelity. Though the bird migrates to Baja in the winter, it regularly returns to
the same site, in Central California, every year, to breed. When the babies mature, they dont go far to new breeding grounds - no more than 100 km or so.
Furthermore, all population at the three other areas - Three-Mile Marsh, Castleton Creek and Delinger Meadow - are close to carrying capacity.
Adding to the populations will ensure that theyll start to die out. Why is this a problem? Again, were dealing with a species that, if it stood on its own,
would be definitely be considered "endangered." Its also extraordinarily difficult to translocate individual birds to other population centers. Again, the population, as a whole, is too small to think about
