works. Scholars to this day are uncertain of exactly how many works Shakespeare has actually penned and how many were lifted from other works and reshaped by The Bard. However, its been proven that one of Shakespeares works, The Winters Tale, was a direct take-off of Pandosto, a romantic tragedy, written by Shakespeares contemporary, poet and writer Robert Greene. Greene, who despised Shakespeare, regularly criticized his works and his methods of writing. The plot of The Winters Tale involves jealousy and recrimination in the first part (i.e., Leontes suspicion of his wife, Hermione and her ultimate collapse and make-believe "death") because of his lack of faith in her); remorse and regret in the second (Hermiones baby is taken away, Leontes is grieved because he loses his wife and son) and, in the third, reconciliation and joy (Perdita, the baby who was abandoned, returns to Leontes court and its learned that Hermione has actually been alive for 16 years, but under the care of her friend, Pauline) (Shakespeare). The plot of The Winters Tale isnt a whole lot different from the original source, Greenes Pandosto: The Triumph of Time, which was published in 1588 (Historical/Literary Information). Shakespeare certainly changed the characters names - but made few more changes. Greenes Pandosto, King of Bohemia became Shakespeares Leontes, King of Sicilia (Historical/Literary Information). Bellaria Queen of Bohemia, by the same token became Hermione, Queen of Sicilia (Historical/Literary Information). Garrinter, the son of the King and Queen, becomes Mamillius, and the abandoned daughter Perdita in The Winters Tale was Fawnia in Pandosto (Historical/Literary Information). Meanwhile, Pandostos Egistus, Dorastus and Franion are, respectively, Polixenes, Florizel and Franion in the Shakespeare edition (Historical/Literary Information).
