PDAs. As most people know, the use of PDAs has exploded during the past five to ten years, partly because the price has been so reasonable and partly because the
technology has become so user-friendly. Palm, Inc. is actually behind both of these moves and issues -- and although the company has some economic problems today, its still provides
an interesting case study in terms of economics, economic theories, marketplace structures and other factors. Palm Inc. revolutionized the hand-held market, not
only through a rather remarkable product that operated efficiently, but also in the way it was promoted and sold. Partly because it was a pioneer Company and partly because it
entered marketplace at the right time and under the right circumstances, Palm became the definitive name in hand-held devices, and until recently, has enjoyed being at the top of the
heap of this particular niche in the industry. For purposes of this paper, we will focus on Palm, Inc. and examine the
company from a microeconomic point of view. Palm, Inc. is an interesting example for use in a economic-oriented paper for several reasons.
First, it was the first company to introduce hand-held devices -- or at least, was the first such company to actually earned
a profit from sales of such devices. As we will note, of such companies were in existence at the time, but the products produced by these companies tend to
