However, it would seem that this willpower, alone, will not be enough to save the Salmon from the steady decline in their numbers in the Pacific Northwest. Salmon is an important economic resource as well as food resource. However, the salmon industry began to take too many fish, the salmon population has decreased. Also it is sensitive to human activities as environmental indicator, so the volume has decreased along with the water pollution and unthinkable exploitation. Now, as well as many other projects for saving salmon and its environment, farming salmon is one of the biggest industries worldwide. Many have stated that the Salmon problem is due to the over fishing by commercial fishermen and the lack of conservation efforts and dollars to continue to insure the production of Salmon in the area. Others have mentioned that it is not the fishermen who have caused the problem, but that the problem is environmental and that with global warming, pollution from the cities and run-off from industries and farms, that the Salmon industry hasnt much chance of making a recovery on its own. Another impact that the declining numbers of Salmon has been on the Native American culture, who have looked to the Salmon as both a form of sustenance and a form of sacred religious belief.
