Although many parts of Pacific Asia, such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore are considered developed countries, the geography of Pacific Asia is facing many challenges in the first half of the 21st century. The above is basically a true statement. Pacific Asia is an interesting dichotomy of countries that shares one continent, but different cultures, different economies and different viewpoints. Despite this, however, the "rise of the East" will have a definite impact on what global relations have been in the past and will be during the next millennium. In this paper, well attempt to identify some factors that will help Pacific Asia become even more of a global power than it is today. Well first examine some of the background of this particular region, then well examine where Pacific Asia is today in terms of geopolitical forces and economic forces, then will conclude this paper with a discussion about what the literature says about this regions future. Background In terms of background and history of this region, it needs to be remembered that the "Western" economy is relatively new, only a few hundred years old. This is in direct contrast to the Asian economy - which has been in existence for thousands of years. Yet it took a downturn during the early 19th and 20th centuries - during this time, Western colonialism took over, as the Western countries, impressed by the goods Asia had to offer, decided it would be in their best interests to take over and exploit export of such goods (teas, silks and other goods) (Hou et al, 1995).
