by Cynthia Ozick, it is difficult to know in advance the amount of
emotional investment one is likely to make, however, reader: be warned,
this is a story that will grip your heart and not let go. This 5 page
paper explores the metaphors and symbols of the story in an effort to
understand the greater meaning meant by the author. Bibliography lists 5

be warned, this is a story that will grip your heart and not let go. Ozick is not herself a holocaust survivor. She is a writer who feels
the Jewish historical memory as a personal event through her imagination and the images she is able to provide the world through her writing. The Shawl is a
story based on Jewish tradition, beliefs and the actual events of history to provide a scenario that, although fictional, is embedded within the Jewish mind and culture in a way
that allows the reader a look into the depths of the Holocaust experience. It also provides a second level of meaning, seen through the metaphors and symbolism Ozick uses
to bring additional meaning to the story. While it is true that metaphors enable individuals to communicate ideas surrounding complex and, or, intimate experiences, it is not altogether
true that the experiences are difficult to describe without the use of metaphoric language because of linguistic and grammatical constraints. The use of metaphor enables the conceptual process of
learning and understanding and is not limited by linguistic or grammatical constraints. In the story one meets Rosa, a young Jewish mother who has led a fairly affluent
life and feels herself to have been socially conscious. She has with her a daughter, Magda, who has been nurtured and protected by her mother in ways that only
a mother can do. The student will want to provide an example from the text that gives the reader a look into the world of Magda and Rosa prior
