on a televised Japanese documentary series, My American Wife and Akiko Ueno, wife of Joichi Ueno, Janes boss. Joichi insists that his wife reproduce the meals that are the main
focus of the show. The meals also feature beef, as the point of the show is to promote American beef to Japanese consumers. However, the novel concerns much more than
simply the stories of its protagonists, as Ozeki uses the lives of her characters and the production of the television series to underscore the nature of globalization, as well as
the problems inherent in the production of American beef. The lives of both women are intertwined with the subject of beef, Joichi, who is based in Tokyo, demands that
Akiko reproduce the meals that appear on the show in order to check their authenticity and wholesomeness. However, this results in generating arguments when they disagree over a realistic assessment
of the meals. These arguments provoke Joichi, motivating him to physically, sexually and verbally abuse Akiko, which is something that frequently happens when Joichi is drunk. Another purpose for reproducing
the meals is that Joichi, who is an avid beefeater, believes that the meals will "put some meat on her bones," and that weight gain will aid in Akiko becoming
pregnant (Ozeki 20). Jane is also affected by beef. When her mother was pregnant with Jane, she was prescribed growth hormones that were originally developed to fatten cattle and were
believed to prevent miscarriage. The effect of the pills was to produce birth defects, which for Jane means damaged fallopian tubes. Jane, in doing background research for the show,
learns the whole story behind the DES scandal and, despite the fact that DES use is illegal, its use continues, which means that beef reaching American tables is still high
