be central to psychological inquiry. Unfortunately, the topic has largely been somewhat abstracted in many subfields of psychology, and handled only in a tangential way. In recent years, however, scientists
working in the field of biopsychology have made major inroads towards understanding the biological mechanisms that enable and facilitate the psychological and emotional experience of love. The articles covered in
this review all touch upon this common development; namely, the role that the chemical oxytocin plays in the brains ability to form attachments to other individuals, and to aid in
the process of bonding (Grewen et al., 2005). It is also becoming more apparent, that oxytocin plays a major role in the evolution of mammalian behavioral traits that first enabled
species to act in ways beyond immediate self-interest. Upon reading through this paper, one will come away with a broad overview of the current research being conducted in the field
of biopsychology, particularly in the area of how oxytocin facilitates and augments the experience of love and the formation of relationships. In doing so, one will cultivate a superior understanding
of human relationships, and what truly drives them. Part II - Review of Literature One major recent biopsychological study looked at the relationship between the neuroreceptor prolactin
and oxytocin (Tabak, 2010). While much has been written about oxytocin and its role in modulating feelings of attachment, as well as facilitating a sense of calm, happiness, and well-being
through bonding, this study enhanced its specificity to focus upon the means by which oxytocin plays a role in stimulating the release of prolactin during a particular phase of the
estrous cycle; between diestrus and proestrus (Tabak, 2010). The increase of prolactin during particular phases of estrous grants keen insights into behavioral phenomena also associated with the cycle. In order
