Studies have shown that Americans are getting more and more overweight as the years go by, despite the urge to exercise. Children are more sedate, spending hours in front of the television watching TV or playing video games. They spend hours in front of the computer as well. This leads to poor habits as adults. And, in all honesty, these types of behaviors have been going on long enough now so that studies are indicating a frightening rise in people who are overweight. Interestingly enough, minority groups are among some of the most overweight in the country, not the least of which is comprised by Hispanic individuals. It has been found that many second generation immigrants find themselves overweight, and the problem only gets worse with maturity. Bearing this in mind we present the following paper which examines the condition of the overweight Hispanics in the United States. Studies "Since 1960, CDCs National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has been conducting health and nutrition examination surveys for national, regional, and target populations. In 1982-1984, the Hispanic Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (HHANES) obtained health and nutrition data on the three largest Hispanic subgroups in the United States: 1) Mexican Americans in selected counties in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas; 2) Cuban Americans in Dade County (Miami), Florida; and 3) Puerto Ricans in the New York City area, including parts of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut (1,2)" (Anonymous Topics in Minority Health Prevalence of Overweight for Hispanics, 1989; 00001513.htm).
