The reason that the NAACP was founded was apparently due to the practice of lynching as well as the race riot of 1908 which took place in Springfield, Ill
(NAACP, 2009). Interestingly enough it was white people, white liberals, who created the foundation for the organization (NAACP, 2009). Some of the individuals where descendents of abolitionists and they pulled
together a meeting wherein 60 people, including 7 African Americans, one of whom was W.E.B. DuBois, attended and "signed the call, which was released on the centennial of Lincolns birth"
(NAACP, 2009). Their initial and primary goal was to ensure that all the rights that were guaranteed people, under the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments, would be upheld (NAACP, 2009).
As such the focus was primarily upon the minorities in the nation who were not receiving such freedoms, although the Amendments allowed for such freedoms (NAACP, 2009).
A few decades later, during the Great Depression, they turned their focus on economic equality as well, arguing that white labor unions were to blame for
a great deal of problems (NAACP, 2009). "[T]he Association cooperated with the newly formed Congress of Industrial Organizations in an effort to win jobs for black Americans" (NAACP, 2009).Through the
