the 1980s when Dr. Fujio Masuoka invented the NOR and then later the NAND flash memory (Fulford, 2002). This was undertaken while working for Toshiba (Anonymous, 2008). Nor flash
memory was the first time of non volatile computer memory, the characteristics included long write and erase times, but there is also the provision of a full address and data
buses (Anonymous, 2008). This has a random access architecture, with the ability to undergo about 10,000 and 1,000,000 erase cycles (Anonymous, 2008). The name flash drive is believed to have
been suggested to Dr. Masuoka by a colleague; Mr. Shoji Ariizumi who noticed that the erase process of the memory was reminiscent of a cameras flash (Fulford, 2002). The
invention was made public when it was presented in San Francisco at the IEEE 1984 International Electron Devices Meeting (Fulford, 2002). The first NOR flash memory was commercially produced
by IBM in 1988 (Tal, 2002). The architecture of the NOR flash memory is shown below with the memory cells made from floating gate transmitters. Figure 1 NOR Flash
Memory Cell (Anonymous, 2008). NAND flash memory was the next development; the development was announced in 1987 by Toshiba and in 1989 they announced the
release of the NAND flash drive. This was an improvement with faster write and read speeds, and only needed a smaller chip for each cell, facilitating higher storage levels and
a lower production cost as ell as a higher capacity ((Pavan et al, 1997). However, there is also a disadvantage as there is no provision within NAND for random
access storage, this means that unlike NOR it is not suitable to replace program ROM, but it is suitable for mass storage solutions. NAND flash makes use of tunnel injection
