events were the coming of the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Great Society, and the Vietnam War. The following paper examines each of these periods separately. 1. The Coming of the Cold War During WWII, interestingly enough, the United States and the Soviet Union were essentially on the same side. But, after WWII things changed and "The United States and the Soviet Union were the only two superpowers" (Global Security.org, 2010). During the war the United States saw the Soviet Union as their ally and the Soviet Union saw the United States as a powerful ally in relationship to material support. In many ways they were on the same side in WWII, but their political ideals were very different. "As the War neared its conclusion, the future of Eastern Europe became a point of contention between the Soviet Union and its Western allies" (Global Security.org, 2010). Russia felt that Eastern Europe should essentially be under their control and that control was communistic. "In March 1946 Winston Churchill referred to an iron curtain descending across the continent" and this is when the Cold War began for the United States, or Western democracies, did not want communism to spread throughout Europe. Both superpowers possessed nuclear weapons and both had the power to ultimately destroy the entire world with such weaponry. 2. Civil Rights The Civil Rights Movement was a time when African Americans were truly struggling to realize rights they had been denied for many decades, despite the fact that the end of slavery had taken place in the previous century.
