"Compromise Formation," Joseph Sandlers "Countertransference and Role-Responsiveness," and Joseph Sandler and Anne-Marie Sandlers "On the Development of Object Relationships and Affects" combine to provide the psychological student or analyst with
important data on the intricacies of the human mind, and the internal and external processes that are involved. Past theories are incorporated into these studies that are either supported
or opposed; pertinent case studies are employed in terms of illustration and clarification; and the ways in which conflicts are resolved through relationships and experiences at all levels of human
development are investigated. In Chapter 7 of the text, Mind in Conflict, entitled "Compromise Formation," Brenner (1982) contends that all psychic interaction involves
conflict (such as drive derivative, anxiety/depressive affect, and defense) that must be resolved through some type of compromise (p. 109). The author defines compromise formations as "the data of
observation when one applies the psychoanalytic method and observes and/or infers a patients wishes, fantasies, moods, plans, dreams, and symptoms" (Brenner, 1982, p. 109). It relies heavily upon the
functioning of the superego, which is of course itself a compromise formation (Brenner, 1982). According to Brenner (1982), what takes place in the psyche is essentially a balancing act
