Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This is an 8 page paper providing an overview of Mark Twain’s “The Prince and the Pauper”. The paper also includes some tutorial language throughout in square brackets. Mark Twain (1835-1910) wrote his social and political satire “The Prince and the Pauper” in 1881 to tell the story of the social injustices which existed within 16th century Tudor England during which the story is placed; injustices which were still present during Twain’s time in the 19th century. Twain easily and clearly shows these injustices by just presenting “a case of mistaken identity” a situation in which Twain explained that “It may have happened, it may not have happened; but it could have happened” (Twain, 2003). The main concept is based on the social education of the central characters Edward Tudor (the Prince) and Tom Canty (the Pauper) who both benefit from living one another’s lives.

and dreams of becoming a prince. Because of his likeness to the prince, this dream soon becomes a reality and he and the readers understand the role in which he
must play. Edward Tudor, a real character, is the Prince of Wales and the son of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour. His exchange with Tom leads him to a bitter
understanding of the living situations of the lower classes. Other central characters are John Canty, Toms drunken father who is cruel to his son and forces him to beg and
Miles Hendon, Edwards friend and protector (Twain, 1881; Twain, 2003). [Further characters are introduced as minor characters but which are still important to the central story...]
