issues. What is culture? The words "culture" and "civilization" both derive from the Latin word "cultura," which refers to the "cultivation of the soil" and from "civis," which refers
to the "status of citizenship" (Barnard, 2003). In a modern context, "culture" has proven to be a word that is difficult to define. A survey of the concept produced 164
definitions; however, in general, "culture" is treated as a component or stage in the process of civilization (Barnard, 2003). Three definitions of "culture" are that it refers 1) to a
"general state of habit of mind...2) a general state of intellectual development in a society as a whole; 3) the general body of the arts; and 4) a whole way
of life, material, intellectual and spiritual" (Barnard, 2003). What is cultural diversity? "Cultural diversity" refers to the fact that there a multiplicity of human cultures exist
in the world. In other words, in different societies, and within segments of difference societies, people follow different cultural behaviors and expectations that are based on particular histories and related
to their ethnic, religious and/or racial origin. When educators and policymakers speak of cultural diversity, and particularly regarding the challenges facing cultural diversity, they generally are referring to the social
