expert opinion was that babies did not possess any significant degree of cognitive development and did not begin to develop the potential of their minds until they started to acquire language skills. Today, researchers and scientists acknowledge what parents have known for years, which is that infants, from birth onward, are highly aware of their surroundings, as they "gather, sort and process information" as their sensory powers develop (Wells, 2007). As this suggests, cognitive development for a baby entails the "learning process of memory, language, thinking and reasoning" (CDC, 2005a). One of the first learning task that a baby accomplishes is learning how to recognize her or his mothers voice. Other learning tasks include learning to focus vision. In other words, infants learn from birth, which prepares the brain for the tasks of learning language and other cognitive skills. A newborn studies faces, particularly the mothers face, makes eye contact, and begins the laborious process of learning about the world. A three month old begins to develop a social smile, smiles that the sound of a parents voice and watches faces intently (CDC, 2008). By the time a baby is 7 months old, the typical childs cognitive development has reached the point that he or she enjoys social play, can find a partially hidden object, and responds to the sound of his or her name (CDC, 2008). By a year, a baby can find hidden objects with ease and will look at the correct picture "when the image is named" (CDC, 2008). The bonding between parent and child is the beginning of social learning as well as cognitive learning and shows how learning areas are frequently interconnected.
