Introduction "Yin shi nan nu" better known as "Eat Drink Man Woman" (1994) was surprisingly popular in the U.S. movie market considering the distaste so many Americans have for sub-titled movies. Written and directed by the popular Ang Lee who is now best known for the 2000 hit "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," the movie tells the story of the story of a master chef who is nearing retirement, named Chu (Sihung Lung), who lives in Taipei with his three unmarried daughters. Even that little bit of information, what one is likely to read on a movie poster or the back of the rental video box, tells a lot about the story. What it does not tell is the depth, grace, and often touching humor with which the story is actually presented. Family, love, and tradition are all presented, as well as the perennial search for happiness and romance. In many ways the film is something of a predictable family-drama-romance but what is not predictable is how delightfully it is brought to life.
