about a dysfunctional family, a play about the destructive forces of society, the need to cling to impossible dreams of youth in the face of realities, and also as a
play about the complexities of the human psyche, to name but a few of the possibilities. The following paper provides a basic overview of the play. The Glass
Menagerie The primary characters in this play are Tom, who narrators, Laura and Amanda. Tom and Laura are the children of Amanda. The son is a man who is
trying hard to find way out of his own particular circumstances, and he is often constricted by the realities of his mother and sister. But, he dearly loves them and
is essentially the one who makes connections with the world on the outside. He is the bridge to the outside world as he goes to the movies and works and
has a life. The mother is a woman lost in her past, imagining that she is still being sought after by men perhaps. She is a woman who dreams
of the best for her children but yet she has no real connection to reality and as such is really of no help to her children. The daughter/sister is
the one who is primarily the main focus of the play and it is her collection that bears the title of the story, as she collects glass figures. She is
a recluse, a sensitive creature, that is often reflected in the image of the unicorn in her collection. She is protected by her mother and her brother and is incapable
of dealing with the harshness of the real world. With an understanding of the characters at hand we turn to an overview of the story itself. In the beginning
