it "as an example of serious institutionalized racism and relate it to prejudice, the lack of opportunity for minority persons in education and legitimate employment, quality of life in inner-city
ghettos and housing segregation" (University of Michigan, 1998). Other people see it as proof of the fact that minority people are generally more violent and engage in criminal activity more
than white people (University of Michigan, 1998). With this in mind the following paper examines the problem and seeks to discover if the overpresentation of minorities in the criminal justice

little argument concerning the fact that minorities are clearly overrepresented in the criminal justice system. One author notes that "Among minority groups, overrepresentation of African-American youth are greater in most
States, particularly at arrest and in confinement, than they are for any other minority group" (Poe-Yamagata; Jones, 2000). In another study, presented by the same authors, it was also noted
that the African American and Hispanic youths were generally treated far more harshly than the white criminal youth (Poe-Yamagata; Jones, 2000). Such information allows us to see that "These results
give a comprehensive overview of the disparate treatment of youth of color in the justice system, based on the most complete data on juvenile justice processing" (Poe-Yamagata; Jones, 2000). And,
