will overburden the Earth to the point where it cannot support human life, but others do not believe there is any cause for concern. This paper discusses the question of
whether or not the Earth could support the "Australian life style" at that population level, and argues that the greatest threat to human survival is our indifference to the problem
of overpopulation. Discussion In order to answer this question, we must first determine what the "Australian life style" is. In the first place, Australia is a large country, comparable in
size to the United States, with a small population. In 2003, it had a population density of 2.5 people per square kilometer; by comparison, Japan had 338 people per square
kilometer; the U.K. 244; and France 109. This means that Australians are used to having a great deal of space. Perhaps because of the small population, Australians are highly individualistic.
They want to be treated as separate persons, not defined as members of a certain group or class, and they dislike being overly dependent on others. Australians also tend to
believe strongly in equality. Most Australians grow up believing that people should have equal social, legal and political rights, and the Australian Constitution protects these rights. In addition, recent anti-discrimination
laws try to prevent discrimination on the basis of race, gender and marital status. In Australia, people think of themselves as being equal to everyone else, no matter if they
are accountants or taxi-drivers, waitresses or teachers-and they expect to be treated with respect. Although no one knows how many Aborigines there were in the country before Europeans arrived, the
