Grandfathers house overlooks a valley in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains in Western North Carolina. The valley contains an assortment of these light green pastures and cornfields. A few houses and barns are scattered along the fringes, and a white country church stands at the center of the widely-scattered buildings. Looking from Grandfathers front porch, it appears that the valley below is frozen in time. The patchwork pastures give no indication of holding life; there is no movement discernible around the homes and barns below or on the road connecting them. The life is there, of course, only too far away to see unaided. There is great evidence of human life after the dark green of the forest cover begins to blaze yellow, red and orange in the fall, however, for a thin column of smoke rises from every chimney in the valley. It has long been held that only the land in the valley has value, because the hills are too steep and rocky to be of any value for farming. The soil is thin on the steep hillsides; rains wash the rich, fertile topsoil to the valley below. There is a transition area between Grandfathers front porch and the valley, of course. Undulating ridge tops cascade into the valley, each hill lower than the one from which it progresses toward the valley.
