1. Introduction The way on which a company create profits for shareholders and provides value of customers and other stakeholders is
dependant on many factors; these include the way coasts are incurred and controlled and the way ion which service is provided. To retain customers, especially in services such as banking,
the standard of service is a critical success factor. However, services cost money and higher levels of service can result in the requirement of investment in supporting systems and labour
costs associated with high service levels which may be seen as clashing with the drive for higher profits and cost cutting. One approach that has been popular in many
areas of commerce is that of outsourcing, this can cover a range of issues and be implemented in a number of ways which reflect the values of the organization and
demonstrate this is not a singular limited tool. By looking at two banks in the US the approaches to outsourcing can examined to demonstrate the ways in which the planning
and implementation may be divergent and to consider is outsourcing will always have to be associated with the negative perceptions that are often quoted in the mass media, such as
the loss of jobs to foreign lands and reduction in service levels. To examine this the paper will first look at the concept of outsourcing and consider how and
why it is undertaken. Following this the paper will look first at Wachovia Corp., where there is a case of the traditional approach and then the Bank of America where
