their attitude makes the workplace pleasant. Employers have known this for a long time, and knowing this, most strive to make the work environment safe and comfortable for all; it
only makes sense for them to do so. We usually think of motivating employees as an action or actions a company takes to make its workforce happy and productive so
that it will maximize profits; what we might call "enlightened self-interest." This paper explores other reasons for employers to maintain good employee motivation and morale: the influence of the government,
unions and other outside agencies. Discussion There have been significant changes in the workforce in the last 30-50 years, not all of them for the better, at least from the
employees view. Technology has greatly improved with the idea that it would provide "support" to "ease the burden of jobs," but it has instead had the effect of increasing the
inequality of income (Price and Burgard 2006). Management struggles within the labor movement during the 1970s and 1980s "resulted in lower levels of union membership and reduced benefits for American
workers" (Price and Burgard 2006). Further, the "enterprise culture" that rose to prominence in the 1980s "encouraged strong movement for deregulation of American business and privatization of government services" (Price
and Burgard 2006). In addition, the recessions of the 1980s and 1990s caused businesses to offshore many of their operations and downsize their manufacturing operations (Price and Burgard 2006). Finally,
the entry of women into the workforce on a massive scale has brought with it the problem of combining "family and household responsibilities and work" (Price and Burgard 2006). All
of these conditions mean that the workplace that existed 50 years ago has disappeared completely, resulting in a significant challenge for employers who want to motivate their employees. As noted
