This scenario has all of the markings of a positive, encouraging exchange with only one factor out of place: Chrissy may be too young for Melanies approach to encouragement.
At only five months, Chrissy does not yet have the motor control she needs for her body to obey what her mind wants it to do. Melanie means
well, but she risks building discouragement rather than building Chrissy up. However, though Chrissy may not understand the words that Melanie uses, she certainly understands Melanies excitement and approval.
Gillian There are no factors even remotely out of place in this scenario. Tess allows doubt to creep in when she has
almost traversed the entire length of the beam, and Gillian helps her dispel that doubt by encouraging her to take those few, final steps. Tess knows she already has
completed most of the journey and that she has only a few more steps to go. Gillians encouragement can mean all the difference to how Tess feels about her
