travelling abroad. Outbound tourism is a major industry, to expected that by the year 2018 China will be the worlds second-largest market tourist market (Shanghai Daily, 2008). The reason for the increase in outbound tourism is a result of the number of convergent factors, all of which have positive influences on the demand by Chinese citizens to travel internationally. Significant social changes taking place within China since 1978, change began when Deng Xiaping took over and there was a gradual introduction of some market reforms and the level of control was relaxed. There was increased recognition of the need to change and participate in the world economy; however, the issue of communism was never in question (Wong, 1998). Part of this change saw the opening of the policy 1979 making travel more easily, with the number of Chinese passports issued increasing at a rapid rate. Subsequently, China joined the World Trade Organization, a move which have necessitated the reduction of trade barriers. As trade there is decreased, and technology has changed there has been an increasing level of exposure of global influences and cultures to Chinese people. With increased knowledge there also comes the potential for increased interest and a desire to experience some of the images or experiences that are portrayed in the media, or are encountered direct viewing directly as a result of the reduction of trade barriers. The desire to undertake international travel is only one aspect of the way in which demand emerges. In order for demand to become a reality the potential purchases need to have sufficient disposable income that can be utilized to make a purchase (Nellis and Parker, 2006).
