Advertising is a primary component of modern society. Commercial interests are permeating every aspect of our lives. Our public spaces, both
physical and tangential, are increasingly subjected to commercial messages which are designed to change our perceptions and ultimately to render economic benefit on the commercial entity responsible for the commercial
messages. Many of our actions, from the foods we eat, to the way we dress, to the way we perceive our bodies, and indeed to the way we perceive
our own sexuality can be contended to be directly influenced by advertising. The fact is that that has been the case for decades. To illustrate the power of
advertising as it existed almost two decades ago it is helpful to analyze one specific ad from that time period. The advertisement that has been chosen appeared in the
December 1990 edition of "Boys Life" and features a hand-held game system. Obviously, advertisements in "Boys Life" are going to target a specific
component of our society. That component is adolescent boys. In the featured ad, in fact, the primary focus is on a young boy of approximately twelve years of
age. He is well-tanned and his medium length hair largely unkept. The latter flows backward with the speed of his movement. The boy is bedecked with the
cool dress of the day, with wrap-around sunglasses, a muscle shirt, tight denim-like pants. Young boys are personified, of course, by
