Furnace" depicts the lives of Slavic immigrant workers and their families in America in the steel mill towns from 1881 through the early part of the twentieth century and the
capitalist-boom, the Industrial Revolution, and the Great Depression. The book is particularly interesting in regard to the light that it sheds on the labor situation which existed in our
country during this time period. In the last chapter of "Out of This Furnace", for example, the grandson Dobie becomes a union organizer. Even more interesting is
the fact that the attempt to organize labor unions succeeded during this time period when those same attempts had failed in the years after World War I. The scenario
which unfolds in "Out of This Furnace" illustrates key differences between those periods, differences which translated into success rather than failure. Although fictional,
Thomas Bells novel is historically accurate in its descriptions of the settings and conditions which characterized life during this difficult period in American history. Bell provides an interesting outline
of the regional history of Pittsburgh but through "Out of This Furnace" he offers a particularly useful insight into the dreams, goals, and values which drove our country during this
time, dreams, goals, and values which ultimately became incorporated into todays culture as well. What becomes clear in "Out of This Furnace" is that the families which are depicted
