five steps in "The Good Immigration Model." These are to: 1) get a low-wage, long-hours job; 2) learn to speak English; 3) become a U.S. citizen; 4) become Americanized; 5)
become more educated. These five steps may not be reflected in the first generation who come to America, in fact, it may take generations for all five steps to be
realized. The transition from one step to the next can be seen in a Hungarian family Thomas Bell writes about in his 1941 book, "Out of this Furnace - Immigrant
life." Bell traces three generations. The story begins with George Kracha sailing to America in the mid-1880s. Kracha believes he is leaving poverty for a better life. He
is not a very smart man and takes a vast number of unwise steps throughout his life. Georges daughter, Mary, reflects the second generation in this familys history. She moves
up only slightly in her life, marrying Mike Dobrejcak, a steelworker, just as her father is. The hope for this family comes with the third generation represented by Marys son,
Dobie Dobrejcak. Dobie fulfills the American dream, he is not content being only an ill-paid, badly-treated steelworker. He becomes basically an activist bringing the union into the mills. Kracha
himself reflects only Goods first step in the Model. He comes to America and gets a bad job that is back-breaking for low wages and ill-treatment. He never learned to
speak English coherently. Mary, his daughter, herself a widow, tries desperately to make a better home for her children and her widowed father. She speaks English and has more education
than her father but it will be her children who finally benefit from living in America. Mike Dobrejcak was also a steelworker but he had higher goals as well as
