Cruz (UCSC). The experience of being gay has changed over the ensuing decades since Gay liberation first emerged as a civil rights movement in the 1960s. The UCSC project
demonstrates how the experience of being other than heterosexual on the UCSC campus changed during this time. In 1965, the first Gay Rights demonstrations were still four years away
and "homophobia and intolerance" were rampant, a homosexuality was remained pathologized by the American Psychiatric Association, which labeled it as a psychiatric order, a sign of bias that was not
removed until 1973 ("Nothing...1960s"). Faculty members who were not heterosexual kept their sexual orientation "in the closet," especially since two prominent campus leaders at UCSC publicly expressed their anti-gay attitudes
("Nothing...1960s"). In the last 1960, this began to change, as the landmark Stonewall Riots in New York City on June 27, 1969 signaled that a time of change was coming.
David Thomas was a politics professor at UCSC from 1966 to 1999. His course, entitled "Sexual Politics: Gay Politics," was the first course offered at UCSC to address
gay rights and one of the first in the country. Thomas was born in 1934 in a small Iowa town. Like most gay men born prior to gay liberation, he
spent the first part of this life trying to conform. At the age of 32, he was still not openly gay. He said, "For me, coming out, as for most
people of my generation, was a much more protected period" than it is today (Thomas). Typically, people came out socially to a few close friends, then to a broader circle,
and, lastly, to their professional colleagues. In 1973, Thomas achieved tenure and this was the year that came out openly as a gay man. He said, "I bought a house
