Opinions vary widely as to the appropriate role of genetic engineering in the future of
the human race. In "Our Posthuman Future: Consequences of the Biotechnology Revolution" political historian Francis Fukuyama explores the radical changes which could result as a result of ever-increasing technologic
and scientific abilities. Genome studies, in particular, present a number of concerns, both philosophical concerns and ethical concerns. These same studies, however, present phenomenal possibilities for our future,
possibilities which have the potential to be far more positive than negative in their overall manifestations. Despite the contention presented above that genome
studies offer the potential for great advancements for the human race, Fukuyama (2002) presents certain valid concerns which are worthy of consideration. Fukuyama (2002) envisions an ideological nightmare in
regard to the new directions the world will undoubtedly take in regard to human rights and, indeed, even the definition of humans. Fukuyama (2002) contends, in fact, that the
most critical threat which will arise from biotechnology is: "the possibility that it will alter
human nature and thereby move us into a `posthuman stage of history" Fukuyama (2002) has
concerns that the impact we will see to human nature will ultimately manifest in impacts to the social and political institutions built upon that human nature. His concerns over
