Americas multicultural heritage is reflected in practically every aspect of our daily lives. The arts, in particular,
are a multicultural product. It might be contended, in fact, that the performing arts are the strongest reflection of the diversity of multicultural issues and ideologies that underpin American
life. As a consequence, the image that we see there is relevant not only to the culture that produced it but to all Americans.
While there are many cultural voices in our country, none are more resounding that the voices of Asian Americans, Latino Americans, and African Americans in regard to the
many messages that they deliver through the performing arts. Multicultural theatrical productions can take a variety of forms. Indeed, theater itself can take a variety of formats ranging
from the live plays to cinematic production, production which combines both audio and video into a medium which require the human element in order to be experienced. Whether live
or electronically reproduced, however, audiences are impacted by both the audio and visual aspects of multicultural performing arts. Multicultural performing arts
range across all spectrums of the ideological rainbow. There are essentially no boundaries to the modern world of multicultural performing arts. One of the more interesting features of
this art form, however, is how it elicits empathy from all segments of the American populace. In his essay "Realism and the cinema" Macabe (1974) provides considerable insight as
