considered himself a gentle Leftist in many ways. He had high ideals and grand notions about the world. But, then one day he was informed that his brother-in-law had been
kidnapped by guerrillas. Herberts brother-in-law was a very wealthy Texas oilman who also lived in Colombia. Herbert found out that his brother-in-law, Jake Gambini, was held captive and the burden
was place upon Herbert to find a way to get Jake free. It was up to Herbert to figure out how to deal with Colombia and also the United
States in an effort to get Jake out of there. It was up to him to figure out how to negotiate the release of Jake. And, in all honesty, we
note that Herbert was ill equipped to do what he was asked to do. But, being an intellectual, a professor of history, he made it his goal to uncover truths
and find a way to get Jake free. This is the entire foundation of the book, and in this foundation we see Herbert going through different narratives and diaries
