play. The character of Othello is not from the culture wherein the story takes place and as such he is clearly an outsider in many ways. Although he is seen, by many of the characters, as a very important military man and leader, and thus respected, he is also seen as a powerful threat, especially to Iago who essentially implements all his skills in bringing down Othello, and in always pointing out Othellos position as an outsider. The following paper examines Othello as an outsider. Othello as Outsider In the very beginning of this play the audience/reader knows that Othello is different than the culture wherein he now resides. These people are Italians and Othello is a Moor. This is something that Iago, who truly instigates all negative thought about Othello, brings into the play right from the beginning. Iago focuses on illustrating how Brabantios daughter, Desdemona, is essentially being all but raped by a black man, likening him to an animal: "Even now, now, very now, an old black ram/ Is topping your white ewe. Arise, arise;/ Awake the snorting citizens with the bell,/ Or else the devil will make a grandsire of you" (Shakespeare I i). In this quote it is very obvious that Iago is claiming that not only is Othello an outsider but akin to the devil, or an animal. It is not that he is just from a different country, and black, but that he is evil, dangerous and not to be allowed near his daughter, although Othello and Desdemona are married Iago, in this first act and scene, further illustrates this picture by telling Brabantio "I am one, sir, that comes to tell you your daughter/ and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs" (Shakespeare I i).
