The following paper first examines the writers, separately, and then the plays Othello and Oedipus, also separately. The paper finishes with a comparison and discussion of the two works.
Shakespeare There is, in all honesty, not a great deal that is actually known about the man who was William Shakespeare. Most of the information related to his early
years, his marriage, and his career is somewhat vague and unproven. According to the Columbia Encyclopedia, "it is thought that as an actor he played old mens roles, such as
the ghost in Hamlet and Old Adam in As You Like It. In 1596 he obtained a coat of arms, and by 1597 he was prosperous enough to buy New
Place in Stratford, which later was the home of his retirement years" (Columbia Encyclopedia 35036). He was never a wealthy man and what is known about him for certain is
that he was very involved in theater, writing and playing. His works were quite varied as he wrote comedies, poems (or sonnets), dramas and tragedies. As one critic notes: "EVER
since the first publication of Shakespeares collected plays in 1623, readers and audiences around the globe have, by their seemingly indefatigable book-buying and theatre-going, paid homage to his exceptional literary
talent and his keen insight into the human psyche" (Straznicky 807). Sophocles Sophocles is also a man that remains somewhat allusive in terms of historical accuracy perhaps, although
