"Othello", Shakespeares classic story of jealousy, betrayal, and murder. In "Othello" as well as many of his other plays Shakespeare appears to be writing against the conventional notions of
genre which existed during his time. Shakespeares poems exhibit a sensuality and a sweetness which is simply not often matched by other writers of his day. Many feel
that undoubtedly Shakespeare was shaped by his own reading and the plays he had seen. They indicate that these experiences shaped his expectations of drama as a genre.
Others contend that genre was not a strong shaping influence for Shakespeare. Despite its less rigid nature, Shakespeares "Othello" could definitely be classified in the tragedy genre. It
can be contended that not only does the Aristotelian criteria that the audience feel pity for the tragic hero holds true in "Othello" but also that this character is deserved
of the sympathy which he receives. To understand just why Othello is deserved of sympathy it is first necessary to understand
that the classification of "Othello" as a "tragedy" is, of course, not to be confused with the more common contemporary usage of employing it to describe any type of catastrophe
or form of bad luck. Instead, this literary genre provides a dramatic yet serious and dignified depiction of sorrow and misfortune which are either encountered by or caused by
