extremely villainous, but rather possessed of a fatal flaw. Shakespeares character Othello fits this injunction perfectly. He is a virtuous man -- an outstanding, brave soldier -- who is
deeply in love with his wife. However, Othello also has human frailties. It is because Othello allows Iago to bring these frailties to the forefront of his personality that he
suffers a tragic downfall. Early on in the play, Shakespeare goes to great lengths to establish the good character of both Othello and Desdemona. This characterization is crucial to
the internal logic of the drama because the tragic nature of the narrative hinges on the audience being aware of the basic nature of both of these individuals. As the
play opens, it is quickly established that Desdemona has eloped with Othello. The efforts of Desdemonas father to establish whether or not she married of her own free will offer
an opportunity to establish Othellos superlative character. In defending his actions before the Duke, recounting some of his life story, he speaks so eloquently that the Duke comments that
Othellos tale would "win my daughter too" (Act I, Scene 3, line 171). As this suggests, Othellos speech tells the audience a great deal about his character. First
of all, it establishes his character as a nobility in his own right, as he is descended from royalty. Furthermore, Othellos simple recitation of his life experiences shows that he
has endured and triumphed over considerable adversity. Rather, the whole point to dramatizing this disagreement was to afford Othello the opportunity to defend himself to the Duke.
