one of the primary themes is that of jealousy and this is something which is particularly well demonstrated in the interaction between Iago and Othello. Iago has several reasons for
disliking Othello, and whether or not these reasons can be considered as valid, it is certainly the case that he exerts a dreadful revenge, in the way that he is
instrumental in bringing about the deaths of both Desdemona and Othello.
It is evident that he is aware of Othellos vulnerability and insecurity regarding his wife; we see that although Desdemona is a virtuous wife,
Othello is never quite sure of her trustworthiness. This is not so much a feeling brought about by Desdemonas behaviour, which is exemplary, but rather something which arises from Othellos
own insecurities. On the one
hand, his natural tendencies as a commander to dominate others mean that he tends to see Desdemona as a possession, and wishes to maintain control over her. However, he is
also aware that Desdemona is not one of his soldiers, obliged to obey orders; she is her own person and if she chooses not to love him, or to betray
him, then she will do so. It is this uncertainty and lack of faith in Desdemona which first sparks off the potential for jealousy.
