is usually diagnosed through radiological testing. Bone or bone marrow can become infected by a variety of ways. Bacteria can travel into the bone through the bloodstream from other infected
areas in the body. This process is known as hematogenous. Another way is by direct infection, when bacteria enter the bodys tissues through a wound and travels via the bloodstream
to the bone (perhaps after an injury or cut). Open fractures and breaks in the bone with the skin also open - are the injuries that most often develop osteomyelitis.
A bone also can become infected when the blood supply to that area of the bone is affected. This can happen in older people as well, especially patients suffering from
diabetes or atherosclerosis (a disease in which the blood vessels narrow over time). In addition, once the bacteria gets inside the bone cells (intracellular), the bacteria is able to attack
other bone cells. This can make it extremely difficult to treat or eradicate. The disease can not only cause major joint pain and chronic illness, but it can also lead
to disability and possible amputation of certain extremities. The common symptoms include severe pain in the area of the infected bone. They may also suffer from high fever and chills
and feel tired or nauseated. The skin above the infected bone is also usually red, sore and swollen. Its sometimes difficult to diagnose osteomyelitis in infants and young children because
