does or thinks. It is a society that inflicts particular ideals, and allows no individual to deviate from those ideals. Everyone is essentially monitored through Big Brother, which ultimately seems
to see and hear everything everyone does. The following paper examines the story, then discusses the parallels between 1984 and the present year 2007, and lastly the paper examines what
social workers could do to help prevent the conditions of 1984 from ever happening. George Orwells 1984 Orwell envisions the world
of 1984 as one where the powerful keep tabs on all the people, controlling what they think and what they do. The people are constantly monitored and not permitted to
do anything against the Party. They are not allowed real relationships, must always follow the laws, and never think things that are not accepted by the Party. The main character
is incredibly disgruntled with the Party, feels the Party has lied to the people, and disastrously believes one character is part of the underground party that fights the Party. However,
this individual tricks him and ultimately brainwashes him so he will never again think that the Party is anything more than perfect.
In this novel it seems that the people with the power, the government, or later the Party, were those with the wealth and design. Those who were beneath the wealth
and power had little control over what happened and ultimately became ruled by the Party. Such has perhaps always been the case in the history of humanity. Those with power
