each and every person experiences when attempting to fight the intrusion of Big Brother. With every step taken to oppose such implementations of a totalitarian government, there is another
step taken attempting to escape it. Smith is torn throughout the book with regard to how he should deal with Big Brothers omnipotent position. He swings back and
forth from beginning to end, attempting to fight this oppression with a strong will to live, while at the same time falling back into a state of overwhelming indifference when
he realizes his efforts are for not. He truly has no idea whether he wants to live or die, as he languishes unhappily amidst the overbearing pressure of Big
Brother and his own indifference. Besides the obvious theme of power in Orwells 1984, there are also lesser values of that same power
among its characters, particularly between hero Winston Smith and the women in his life. Sex is incorporated with a great deal of power attached to it, as Smith attempts
to regain his lost identity through a succession of sexual activity. Sexual attraction, in and of itself, is a very powerful entity, but Smith utilizes it in a warped
and disturbed fashion, making it a weapon against the totalitarian government rather than an act of love. Smith tries to rekindle his dreams
and hopes of happier days through various avenues of rebellion against the system; one such way is by engaging in an affair with a woman other than his wife.
