It is the intense study of one man, many argue he was based on William Randolph Hearst, as he rises to power and wealth and dies a lonely and abandoned man. It is, in the opinion of most, Welles best film, or as one author notes, "It...represents the pinnacle of Orson Welles film making career" (Berardinelli). The following paper examines how Welles felt about the man who was Kane. Orson Wells and Citizen Kane As mentioned, there was a bit of talk that the film about Citizen Kane was actually a film about William Randolph Hearst, a man who was incredibly powerful and wealthy, and also a newspaper man like Kane. However, one author notes that, "Orson Welles went to his grave denying that Kane was patterned after William Randolph Hearst, Kane would have liked to see a film about his life but not Hearst - he didnt have quite enough style. (O.W.)" (Orson Welles-The Man and His Genius-Films). In this particular assessment it is clear that Welles did not think that Kane was a man who was perhaps born into wealth and class, and as such did not possess the type of upbringing, the sense of station or arrogance, in life that would have made him proud to be the subject of a film. Kane was too simple for that in relationship to his beginnings. And, perhaps Kane was too ultimately too insecure to have desired such a film.
