There are similarities among all of them of course, and each pursues enlightenment in some form. Jainism Jainism originated in East India in 420 BC when "Vardhamana, the last Jina in a series of 24 who lived in East India ... attained enlightenment after 13 years of deprivation and committed the act of salekhana, fasting to death" (The Major World Religions). This is an external view, for Jain theology holds that Jainism is eternal and has no beginning and no end. Jainism shares some characteristics with Hinduism and Buddhism but is more demanding than either. "They believe in karma and reincarnation as do Hindus but they believe that enlightenment and liberation from this cycle can only be achieved through asceticism" (The Major World Religions). Jains also maintain strict diets. They practice fruititarianism, which consists of eating only those plant or animal products that do not kill the source from which it is taken. Thus eating an egg is permissible; eating a chicken is not. The same is true for tomatoes and carrots: eating the tomato does not adversely affect the tomato plant; eating a carrot kills the plant. Buddhism Buddhism originated in India, but it has spread throughout Asia to become the worlds fourth-largest religion. Theravada Buddhism is practiced in Thailand, Burma, Cambodia and Laos; Mahayana Buddhism is practiced in China, Japan, Korea, Tibet and Mongolia.
