times. While most everyone has heard of it, Buddhism goes back quite awhile. It was a man by the name of Siddhartha Gautama who started this religion; he was considered
to be the Buddha, a term that is equated with the sentiment that the individual is awakened or knowledgeable ("The History, Philosophy and Practice of Buddhism," 2007). While many people
think of Buddhism as a philosophy, and that is how it is practiced in the west, it is more aligned with religion and culture in the East. In fact, Buddhism
is really not one discipline. Rather, there exist a variety of sects of religious entities that in some way tie to the original Buddha. In fact, the history of Buddhism
is complex and also hard to relay. There is no concise, linear model to draw upon. Surprisingly, the term "Buddhism" is relatively new (Lopez, 2002). When one looks at
the academic study of religions, there were only four religions to come from the seventeenth century and in modern times, the term Paganism was replaced with a number of "isms"
including Buddhism (Lopez, 2002). When studying the history of Buddhism, again, it is tied to one man. Siddhartha Gautama is the original Buddha and responsible for the advent of Buddhism.
To some extent, his unique history would lay the groundwork for his interest in spirituality. As a boy, Gautama grew up and was raised with wealth ("The History, Philosophy and
Practice of Buddhism," 2007). His father gave him a life of luxury and he wanted him to follow in his fathers footsteps, but Gautama questioned everything ("The History, Philosophy and
