public receives is generally aimed at presenting the culture as exotic and opposite from the American culture. However, in todays world many civilized cultures are not all that different than America in many ways and as such this "exotic" and "opposite" are actually inaccurate, and offered up for viewers only to entertain them. One of the most recent American films to do this is Sofia Coppolas "Lost in Translation." In this film the viewers are presented with numerous stereotypes that further separate the Japanese from the Americans. It is a film that makes jokes at the expense of the culture, a film that never really shows the Japanese people as individuals, and a film that further emphasizes the "otherness" of the Japanese people. It is considered to be a controversial film and right so it seems, because it just further strengthens the subconscious idea, an idea often created by the media, that other cultures are frighteningly different, and clearly presents the viewer with the understanding that the culture is the "other." The following paper examines "Lost in Translation" discussing the stereotypes presented and the lack of truth possessed in the film. Stereotypes: Arguments from Asians "A grassroots organization of Asian Americans campaigns against the film Lost In Translation and its heavy use of Japanese stereotypes for humor. Such depictions perpetuate racial and cultural insensitivity and misperceptions that are harmful to Asian Americans....The group feels that Academy should not award any Oscars to film that gives a biased and offensive portrayal of the Japanese and which perpetuates racial and cultural insensitivity towards Asian Americans" (PR Web, 2004).
