In many ways, American film of the era delineated Oriental culture not from a cross-cultural perspective, but rather as a reflection of the way in which Western audiences perceived Orientals, which was in the majority of cases a stereotypical and inaccurate perception. As White (2001) points out, many Asian countries adopted the stylistic and technical elements of western film in order to create an imitation of the Hollywood spectacle, whereas others, such as Japan, translated cultural elements of traditional drama into the western medium of film without adopting the imitation of western culture as a corollary.
