Essay / Research Paper Abstract
2 pages in length. Understanding the propensity towards transsexuality has perplexed the medical community for decades. Not only is this particular population subcategorized by many different variables, but any definitive findings about why this behavior exists has eluded psychological and physiological research time and time again. Authors van Goozen et al (2002) attempt to piece together a logical progression of events that may occur while the fetus is still within the embryo as a means by which to correlate reasons behind homosexual transsexualism through hormone treatment. definitive findings about why this behavior exists has eluded psychological and physiological research time and time again. Authors van Goozen et al (2002) attempt to piece together a logical
progression of events that may occur while the fetus is still within the embryo as a means by which to correlate reasons behind homosexual transsexualism through hormone treatment. Utilizing the
participation of nineteen female-to-male (FM) and twenty-two male-to-female (MF) homosexual transsexuals, all being cleared and in line for sex reassignment surgery, the authors sought to determine the extent to which
hormone therapy altered tendencies. Along with participation being completely voluntary and all being mandatorily right-handed, the participants were further classified by the following criteria: Genetic females were to have
a menstrual cycle at least twenty-five days in length but no longer than thirty; and no participants were permitted to use oral contraceptives or neuroactive substances. Once the first
test session was completed, the hormone therapy began, which consisted of fifty mg 2x daily of Androcur for MFs and either high doses of intramuscular testosterone-esters (two weeks of Sustanon
at 250 mg), a low dose of the same drug (100 mg) for the same time period or 200 mg 1x daily of oral testosterone undecanoate Andriol. Based upon
a battery of comprehensive cognitive tests that were performed both one week prior to hormone administration and again fourteen weeks after therapy, results indicated what the authors had set out
to prove: "There is evidence of an organizing effect of sex hormones on cognitive functioning, and on visuospatial ability in particular, in homosexual transsexuals." Clearly, while the authors may have
achieved their objective, it is hardly likely they will be able to replicate their findings due to the utilization of very stringent variables present in this study, an important point
