a social institution, despite its negative associations. First, it is important to define social institution. While a precise and general definition of the term proves illusive, some thoughts on how
the term is applied is as follows: "Typically, contemporary sociologists use the term to refer to complex social forms that reproduce themselves such as governments, the family, human languages, universities,
hospitals, business corporations, and legal systems" ("Social Institutions," 2007). Social institutions are entities, systems, bureaucracies and things commonly thought to be institutions in society. People say that marriage is
an institution and that education is too. Organized crime is something that people like to sweep under the rug, but it does exist. Further, many people who have come to
live in the same neighborhoods with organized crime figures have actually taken a liking to them. In general, the lore is that such neighborhoods are protected. People feel safe when
they are on the good side of the organized crime figures. Yet, the truth is that members of these families have been glamorized but they are truly breaking the law.
Many of them are murderers, but aside from such egregious crimes of murder and torture, organized crime organizations are generally in business for the money. There are legitimate businesses owned
by organized crime families where money is laundered. Organized crime does however engage in many illegal activities such as gambling, drug trafficking and prostitution. If one can accept that
