Latino and deemed to be very violent (Gately, 2005). Of course, most gangs are. However, in investigating the racketeering charges and types of crimes involved, it is also easy to
see that this gang is part of an organized crime group. While in general, many people think of organized crime and racketeering as something being equated with La Cosa Nostra
in New York and Chicago for example, there are now new gangs with ethnic backgrounds other than Italian. While the players are younger and from a different community, they are
still involved in organized crime. The indictment at issue is something that falls under federal racketeering laws (Gately, 2005). The gangs name is MS-13 or Mara Salvatrucha (Gately, 2005).
The article goes on to give age ranges between eighteen years old and thirty-one (Gately, 2005). The article does not simply state the facts of the case, or a bit
about the gang, but supplies a good deal of detailed information about this particular gang and its origins. The gang in fact may be traced to Los Angeles (Gately, 2005).
The gang is mostly involved in distributing drugs (Gately, 2005). Today, it is viewed as one of the largest gangs in the United States and is found in ten states
(Gately, 2005). For each member caught, the maximum penalty is a life sentence (Gately, 2005). Cleary, while no death penalty is involved, a life sentence is a very stiff penalty
and so, one can say that the courts are taking the crime of racketeering very seriously. A spokesman explained that the recent arrests are just the beginning of an
attempt to get this gang (Gately, 2005). Prosecutors do not want to indict a few men, but rather, to take the entire gang down. Obviously, with such a large following,
