of police corruption, telling America that the mafia is alive and well and still alive in the famous city in Illinois (Beigel). This paper will focus on organized crime
in Chicago in the days before Al Capone, from its inception through prohibition. First, the question of whether or not the mafia exists will be addressed. Next, organized crime will
be illustrated from its beginnings and in the next part, will be discussed in depth as it existed during prohibition. In these sections, it will be shown that the immigration
of Italian Americans played an integral part in the development of organized crime, as did Irish immigration to a smaller extent. Then, the paper will explore the effects of organized
crime on society. While looking at the effects, there will be speculation as to why these crime families emerged. II. The Existence of Organized Crime Some
people question whether or not organized crime exists; yet, the existence of these groups is well documented and almost common knowledge. The speculation that the mafia is a myth and
gangs, with their intricate organizations, do not really exist are most likely perpetuated by denials of the mob figures themselves. Sociologists study organized crime today and its existence is widespread.
