It is notable that there are higher levels of motivation associated with high trust relationship, whereas lower level of productivity and a higher need for supervision associated with low trust models (Bernerth and Walker, 2009). Low trust models are associated with scientific models, where management are dictating and controlling the way that the employees undertake their jobs (Huczynski and Buchanan, 2007). Early practitioners of scientific management, such as Henry Ford, found that this did not engender good will and poor industrial relations as it placed the management and the employees in different interest groups. However, the practice of human resource management has moved on, and models that are associated with high trust levels are those associated with the human relationship school of thought. This is the model that has evolved form the ideas of Mayo and Maslow, where there is a greater level of attention paid to the quality of the employment relationship, tools such as employee empowerment and increased description on task may indicate trust being given by the employers to the employees, but the focus of these models is employment relationship where trust is engendered. However, they do not specify the way trust may be earned or undermined, it is simply assumed to be a by product of the correct actions and strategies. This may be argued as an understudied area of HRM, but one that is worthy of consideration, with the ability to enhance existing strategies and create a more productive workforce, as trust has been associated with a higher level of commitment and productivity compared to firms where trust does not exist. 2.
